Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.
Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Chester is a beautiful and ancient city where Roman Legionaires, Viking raiders, and Norman invaders once walked. We especially enjoyed the Roman Amphitheatre ruins and the 1000 year old Cathedral. It is worth the trip.

The city is vegan friendly, as well as the people being friendly. All historic sites are within walking distance, there is a sightseeing bus that does a tour with added river cruise as part of the price. Chester is still being excavated due to new architectural findings.
The Visitor centre is well located, near to the cathedral, and the staff are very helpful.
There are many places to eat, some restaurant chains and many local businesses.
The garden was very tranquil and the location to Chester city centre ,the room was a twin room on first floor no lift so that might be an issue for the less mobile but a lovely quiet location breakfast was fresh and a buffet would of preferred coffee and tea being served to you rather than the drinks being in flask type dispensers which was not hot but staff did replenish when asked just not what you expect of this type of hotel everyone wants a fresh hot tea and coffee staff very friendly and welcoming
We had an outstanding stay at the Grosvenor. The hotel staff were excellent, the room was spacious and well-appointed with really nice toiletries in the bathroom. We had drinks at the Brasserie and were very happy with the drinks choices and the ambience. Breakfast was also excellent. Finally, the location could not be better. We would highly recommend this hotel for anyone seeking a touch of luxury when in Chester.
Location was perfect close to the city centre and main roads. Hotel was fantastic, staff helped us out when we had a problem. Window was broke in our room so we where upgraded to a large family room which was brilliant. Breakfast really tasty plenty of choice for everyone. Would recommend and will definitely stay again when back in Chester
The staff at Leonardo was amazing! Every request was promptly answered with a smile & great personality. Accommodations were comfortable & clean. Location perfect with many restaurants nearby. Chester has been the highlight of our trip & we are hoping to return in the future. I would recommend this hotel for every reason possible.
Converted from a former mill the hotel has an excellent location in the centre of Chester, close to the city's historic cathedral and streets. Exceptionally, for the city centre the hotel has its own parking for a modest additional charge. The staff were particularly friendly and helpful. The hotel is modern, smart and clean.
The Hotel Indigo Chester was luxuriously appointed for the price point and the location is excellent.
The common areas and restaurant are bright and stylish and we loved the small snack left for us as well as the nice robes.
The location was wonderful, being so close to Chester's CBD and City Walls. The included breakfast was excellent, especially as it also catered for gluten-intolerant people.
Free parking at the hotel was plentiful.
The leisure and spa facility was nice to have at the hotel and seemed to have a wide range of equipment.
The location of the hotel to Chester City Centre was great.
The bed was comfy and clean bedding.
The hotel was exceptionally clean and tidy, very good parking facilities. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Great location and Chester city centre was a ten minute walk.
Excellent location in the Chester Rows in the heart of the old town. Very well organised apartment, everything worked superbly. Two little glitches were put right straight away.
