Just 250 metres from Zenko-ji Temple, Matsuya Ryokan offers simple Japanese rooms with tatami-mat floors, a green-tea maker and an attached Western bathroom. The hotel features public baths. When we made our reservation, we opted for the all-inclusive package that included breakfast and dinner. Both meals were fantastic! They consisted of a variety of small dishes, making it a delightful culinary experience. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. They kindly picked us up from our room for breakfast and dinner, and they even provided roomservice throughout our stay. Additionally, they always greeted us warmly whenever we returned from a day trip. The room itself was a pleasant surprise. It featured tatami mats, which we were instructed to leave our shoes at the entrance and wear our socks or slippers provided by the hotel. This unique experience added to the overall charm of our stay. Moreover, it was our first time visiting an onsen, which was a delightful and relaxing addition to our itinerary.

Set within less than 1 km of Matsumoto Station and 4.3 km of The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, Nunoya Ryokan offers rooms with air conditioning and a private bathroom in Matsumoto. Great location in Nakamiche, very friendly helpful staff. Room was comfortable and large with new bathroom. Breakfast was very good Japanese food freshly prepared.

Housed in a historic building, the recently renovated Mitsubikiya features accommodation with a garden and free WiFi. The air-conditioned accommodation is 800 metres from Matsumoto Station. This is a place to go for the incredible meals. The chef is passionate about quality Japanese cuisine. I recommend enjoying a meal there even if you don't stay in the hotel, which is quirky but clean and comfortable. You can also get a very hearty breakfast to start the day with. Wonderful hospitality.

Located in the heart of Nozawa Onsen, Tanuki offers guests a traditional accommodation with Japanese-style rooms that feature tatami (woven-straw) flooring. Everything. It was a great location at a great price.

Offering an open-air bath and mountain view, Ryokan Warabino is set in Takayama, 12 km from Suzaka City Zoo and 24 km from Zenkoji Temple. Ryokan Warabino is on an idyllic Japanese valley, overlooking Nagano city. A bit far from everywhere, you definitely need a car to get there! Place is super clean, and rooms are so so nice, comfortable individual mattresses on a tatami floor. Three different onsens to choose from, two of them are outdoors, so relaxing, and you can have them booked privately, never had a problem to get to use them all. On top of that food....oh my...please add it to your booking because you will try to get what traditional japanese food is, so delicious. Dinner was abundant, with 9 courses, make sure your belly is empty before going! Breakfast was as well super traditional, with plenty of different small dishes to try. Staff was all the time smiling, and super accommodating. I would come back thousand times if I could! Thank you so much Ryokan Warabino for such an amazing experience!

26 km from Takato Joshi Park in Komagane, Hotel Yamabuki offers accommodation with access to a sauna, hot spring bath and public bath. This is a traditional ryokan and therefore it’s important to assess it on its own terms. It’s not a luxury hotel, but it is a lovely place to stay. The staff were wonderful, our room was huge and comfortable, the onsen was beautiful and the food was outstanding. I loved the traditional yukata and samue they provided, and the beauty products in the onsen were great. The location is very good- an agricultural town with fields surrounded by mountains- but it is next to a road so it’s not the most scenic. That said, it is very close to an amazing shrine that is one of the most beautiful holy places I have ever experienced.

Berg Marukaneya is located in Nozawa Onsen, 2 km from Lake Hokuryuko. The ryokan is a 3-minute walk from the nearest ski field and has a ski pass sales point. Guests can enjoy a meal at the... Amazing time staying at this lovely hotel. They couldn’t have been more accommodating with changes or kinder when we visited.
