FAQs about hotels in Essex
Close to London, Yet Far Removed
Half-timbered houses lining village greens. Picturesque estuaries and sweeping countryside. Traditional seaside resorts. Affluent Essex has all of this and more.
Its county town Chelmsford has a flint cathedral and waterfront shopping complex. To the east Maldon is a pretty estuary town with a colourful high street, and further south is Southend-on-Sea, a popular seaside town with a good helping of fish and chip shops and the world’s longest pier.
Another pier with amusements is in Clacton-on-Sea, the closest Essex seaside resort to Colchester, the former capital of Roman Britain. City walls remain from this period, and it has a Norman castle and first-class zoo.
From nearby Harwich ferries depart to the Netherlands and Denmark, while Braintree houses the Freeport Outlet Shopping Village. Further west is Stansted Airport, an important hub for low-cost airlines. Closer to London, modern Harlow has the most Essex spa hotels and is close to the Lee Valley Regional Park and Epping Forest.
Brentwood is a bustling commuter town from where you can see the City of London skyline on a clear day. Close by is Basildon with its Hollywood-esque sign, and forming a triangle with them is Grays, home of the huge Thurrock Lakeside Shopping Centre.

We only stayed overnight in Colchester and left round lunchtime, so didnt have much time to browse, but we went to a few places and walked round the park! We will come back again and visit the castle. The area around there looks beautiful, too!Guest review bywolfgangGermany - 8.0

Nice ambient. The rooms were sufficiently equipped. We had a full day party within the hotel halls. Lovely. The hotel surrounding space and town caught my attention best. Took peaceful evening and morning walks. Only thing I missed was a gym.Guest review byOmaUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Chelmsford is a very pretty place .
Chelmsford is a very pretty place . The people are so friendly but unfortunately I cannot walk long distances so I could not get to see it all . But we'll worth a visit. We had breakfast in the Range shop which was quite nice. Plenty of places to eat. ...there is street food also like paella...beautiful arrangements of home made breads The shops are so many you would need a day to see it all. There are a row of markets do there is plenty to see.Guest review byLewis - 10.0
Very under rated resort.
Very under rated resort. We tend to visit a friend who lives in the area out of season. There is still plenty to do and the beach side walks and gardens are excellent. The Greensward cafe near the Martello tower is a favourite place for breakfast and you can let breakfast go down with a game of crazy golf on the course next to the cafe. Newroz Kitchen on Rosemary Rd is an excellent Turkish restaurant where we like to visit each time we go to Clacton. There are all the usual seaside activities that will keep everyone occupied.Guest review byAnonymous - 6.0

The Marygreen Manor is a beautiful hotel and I would recommend it, I didn't spend much time in central Brentwood so my opinion wouldn't be helpful to others but it is close to the M25 so very convenient, the Shell petrol garage near Junction 28 M25 is to be avoided at peek times, its just chaos trying to get in or out again, you've been warned!Guest review byRobertUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The position of the Hotel was ideal to get to where we needed to be. The Hotel setting was lovely, over the lake. Also, after being out all day, it was so convenient to just walk over to the Festival leisure park to find somewhere to eat. A very nice and convenient Hotel. Harvesters, and Wagamama were both good choices to eat.Guest review byGeorgeUnited Kingdom - 6.0
Cheap basic accommodation for 5 min drive to airport.
Cheap basic accommodation for 5 min drive to airport. Advertised hotel opposite-this doesn’t serve food. Better hotel was Lamb and Lion two blocks away-lovely. Fish and chips -walk around the corner or Kebab van opposite.Guest review byJulieAustralia - 6.0

Braintree is a very historic town with glimpses of a medieval past in its narrow lanes around the town centre. It has suffered from a decline after its main local industry closed down. It could be a lovely place if there was investment in it because a number of traditional buildings still stand, and it has a good sized centre for an upgrade to take place. There's a nice local park near Coggeshall Road and the station. Sadly, there's an ugly multistorey car park near the run down shopping area with a few cafes and low priced shops. Very sad to see it so neglected. Maybe local councillors could take a look at towns like Ludlow or Chichester to see how they've protected the historic heart of their home towns. Happy to return again though. Good luck Braintree people.Guest review byPaulineUnited Kingdom - 8.0
