Much of the city is geared towards students but we found at least two good restaurants - the Turkish one and the Italian above it. Beamish was well worth the visit. The first day, we could not gain access to the cathedral because it was matriculation day for the university - but well worth going the second day. Unfortunately, access to the castle is limited to going with a tour on certain days, since it is also a living university college.Guest review byJefferyUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Great location if you plan to visit Barnard Castle.
Great location if you plan to visit Barnard Castle. It is a lovely market town, the market is on Wednesday. Parking is an issue so we parked at the Bowes Museum car park which is free and walked into the town. Lots of good cafe's and some interesting shopping. The location also gives the chance to visit Raby Castle which is only a short drive away and we rate highly.Guest review byLynch - 2.0
Hidden gem is a very interesting choice of name for this...
Hidden gem is a very interesting choice of name for this property as in my experience of the house, there was no beauty and it definitely should be kept hidden from anyone looking for accommodation in County Durham! The location of the property is in a blacked out data and phone signal area and according to the Bureau of Statistics, the location has a seriously high crime rate. Both of these facts, the hosts neglects to list in his description. As for the crime rate, I can believe this as someone tried to break in whilst I was out. The door was damaged and a locksmith had to come and repair it. Mould has set in to the silicon around the bath, the beds and sofa are well worn out and there was a bin liner full of household waste left in the rear courtyard that was attacked by noisy foxes during the night. The host also fails to list in his description that he has a camera inside facing the front door, which I imagine breaches privacy laws. The property is a tacky residence that has signs of being neglected whilst trying to squeeze as much money as possible out of would-be renters. Avoid disappointment and steer clear of this property and any other property this host may promote! He is very short on honesty with his listings!Guest review byJonathanUnited Kingdom - 8.0

We stayed in Stanley due to the proximity to the Beamish open air museum just a short drive away. The bluebell inn, just a short walk from the Ball Alley, is a restruant within a pub, not a pub serving food. The food had a turkish theme and was wonderful. I will return if in the area again.Guest review byRobert - 4.0
Run down was probably what I will remember of this place.
Run down was probably what I will remember of this place. Funny enough the city cemetery was probably one of the most peaceful places to be. Lovely trees and walking areas. Would recommend that as a place to visit.Guest review byAngelaM777United Kingdom - 10.0

Sedgefield is a foodies place, pubs and restaurants all within a few yards of each other. It was good to have a different place to eat each evening. It is also very pretty with the little church and the bellsGuest review byAngusUnited Kingdom - 6.0

Seaham seems very run down with most of the shops shuttered up. We went in August and a lot of bars and places to eat weren't open which we found surprising. One bar wouldn't serve us at 9.45pm as they were closing. The beach is quite hard to reach down lots of steps.Guest review byLauraUnited Kingdom - 8.0

We booked accommodation for evening at Grassholme observatory - clear night and knowledgeable and enthusiatic leaders. Middleton in Teesdale had a selecd.tion of pubs/restaurants but very little else. However trips to High Force and Bowes musuem, made the weekend enjoyable.Guest review byAndrew - North YorkshireUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Beamish is a fantastic place to visit for the whole family.
Beamish is a fantastic place to visit for the whole family. Staff are all in Period Costume of the day and give you the history of that period. It's so big, we recommend riding on one of many Period Trams and Buses to your chosen area, as it can be a long walk. We highly recommend doing Beamish over several daysif you can, as it's too much of a rush to do it all in one day.Guest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom
