Boasting river views, Hacho no Yu offers accommodation with a spa and wellness centre, free bikes and a garden, around 37 km from Ryuzu Waterfall. The onsens and the hiking were fantastic. Perfect location for autumn colours.

Established in 1666, Honke Bankyu is housed in a registered historical building. The Japanese rooms feature traditional decor, futon bedding and a flat-screen TV. This is a fantastic hotel surrounded by nature (mountains, rivers and woods) and transpiring Japanese tradition. The hotel provides an excellent Onsen experience in a 300 year-old ryokan. The setup is essentially Japanese, so expect to sleep in futons, take off your shows and walk on slippers through tatami floor, and have Japanese meals (including breakfast). The kaiseki dinners are an absolute delight, and the outdoor onsen at night is the stuff of dreams. One may feel a bit daunted by the itinerary to the hotel, but it is truly easy to get there. Taking the Aizu Revaty train from Asakusa to Yunishigawa Onsen you then catch a 15 minute bus which will drop you off in front of the Hotel. All this information was communicated by the hotel ahead of our stay. One important tip: plan to buy the train tickets before the day of your trip, because they can be sold out. I am not sure if these tickets are sold online, so the safest way to buy them in advance is to go the tourist office at Asakusa station.

Situated in Nikko, 48 km from Tobu Nikko Station, おやど湯の季 offers accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. This 3-star hotel features a spa experience, with its sauna and hot tub. The facility was very nice and seemed to be recently renovated. The location is very convenient - close to a bus stop and to Heiki no Sato. The room was spacious, clean and bright - very comfortable. We enjoyed the private bath. Although it was described as indoor, we were delighted to find that it had full-length windows looking out onto nature so it felt out door to us! The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. :)
