We, at The Cottage, love to share what we have created with our guests. A lot of love and attention to detail has gone into renovating this old "waenhuis" into what it is today. We love the Klein Karoo, and it gives us great pleasure to offer guests accommodation which feels like home.
De Rust is a small village at the gateway to the Klein Karoo, South Africa. The name is Dutch and literally translates to "The Rest", referring to the town's original purpose of being a resting place for settlers en route through the challenging terrain of a nearby Swartberg mountains.
De Rust was established in 1900 on a portion of Meiring's Farm. Petrus Johannes Mering extensively explored the Karoo's Elephants River, and Swartberg Mountain range between Outdshoorn and Beaufort West. He discovered the route through the Swartberg Mountain Range, which in later years became the famous Meiringspoort.
The quaint town of De Rust hosts a few coffee shops, a great Pub and a few restaurants, as well as a very popular antiques store. Please note operational hours of businesses here may vary from the cities.
