Welcome to Parys – A Hidden Gem on the Vaal River
Just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, Parys is a picturesque town nestled on the southern banks of the Vaal River in the Free State province of South Africa. The town’s name is the Afrikaans version of Paris, inspired by a German surveyor, Schilbach, who had fought in the Siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War. The river setting here reminded him of the River Seine, and the name stuck.
Nearby, you’ll find the local communities of Schonkenville and Tumahole Township, each rich in culture and history.
Whether you’re here to relax, explore, or adventure, Parys has something for everyone:
Battlefield and cultural tours – Discover the region’s historical significance, including guided tours of the township and surrounding heritage sites.
Outdoor activities – Enjoy walking, mountain biking, or 4x4 trails in the scenic surroundings.
Water adventures – Paddle, fish, or simply relax by the water along the Vaal River, also known as the River of the Crater.
Vredefort Dome – A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s oldest and largest meteorite impact site, offering incredible geological and natural beauty.
Festivals & events – The Dome area features some of the country’s largest indoor arenas, hosting popular horse shows, live music, and community festivals.
Hartelus Mark – Held on the first Saturday of every month along the beautiful Vaal River bank, this vibrant local market offers delicious food, handmade goods, arts, crafts, and a warm, festive atmosphere.
Birdwatching – A paradise for bird lovers, with a wide variety of species to spot.
Angling & leisure – Cast a line or enjoy a picnic along the riverbanks – a peaceful retreat for all ages.
Golf & nature estates – Tee off at one of two scenic golf estates, or take a nature walk through the nearby nature estate.
