We are a young ( in mind) ... retired couple (Sylvie 65 yrs & Alfred 73 yrs) who are far from couch potatoes. We are active walkers and usually our dogs Jepp (Schapendoes) and Otje (Dachshund) accompany us on our trips. We have happily converted our cottage into a cozy living space, ideally located and straight into the forest from the garden. We still enjoy the view of Lake Stora Gla every day. In 2019 we laid out a vegetable garden and built a greenhouse. So with a bit of luck we can share some of that proceeds with our guests, although growing vegetables in Sweden is not so easy. The animals that regularly walk or fly into our garden complete our nature experience.
Glaskogen Nature Reserve is a 28,000 hectare wilderness area (the largest nature reserve in the province) with winding waterways, large and small lakes and extensive forests. There are a total of 300km of hiking trails, ranging from a short morning walk to weekly walks. There are scenic canoe routes that go through several of the reserve's nearly 80 lakes with great fishing opportunities and unique wildlife experiences.
Lenungshammar is a hub for the nature reserve and is a good starting point for visitors.
The information center in Lenungshammar offers mountain bikes specially adapted for tours on unpaved roads. You can also rent canoes, boats and fishing equipment. Skiing, horseback riding, dog sledding, safaris, swimming, golf are also among the possibilities. As well as beautiful parks, museums and architecture. Visitvarmland is a good website for planning trips.
Elk, hares, martens, foxes and beavers are typical of the area. Tracks of lynx are seen every year and bears have visited the area in recent years. Within the reserve there are 90-100 nesting bird species.
