Located at almost the tip of Goa in the north, lies the vibrant village of Arambol. A far cry from the more popular and crowded beaches in North Goa such as Baga, Calangute and Anjuna, yet more lively than its immediate neighbours - Morjim, Ashwem, Mandrem and Querim - Arambol has a completely different energy of its own. Locally known as 'Harmal', this beach strip has been popular with long-staying foreign tourists (read hippies) from as way back as in the 60s. Even today, groups of travelers from all over the world come to Arambol to live in communities of like-minded people who practice alternative forms of music, art, therapy, yoga and healing. Every evening as the sun goes down, an impromptu flea market and drum circle come up on the beach; nearby there's a natural, freshwater lake at the bottom of a hill. The more adventurous can even climb the hill and discover an ancient banyan tree at its heart, often frequented by sadhus (Indian priests) and their followers. Restaurants dishing up everything from wood-fired pizzas to Israeli fare and open-air bars featuring eclectic live bands are the norm here.
