The town's name derives from two Greek words, mone and emvasia, meaning "the only entrance" Its Italian form, Malvasia, gave its name to Malmsey wine. Monemvasia nickname is the Gibraltar of the East or The Rock.
The town and fortress were founded in 583 by inhabitants of the mainland seeking refuge from the Slavic and the Avaric invasion of Greece. A history of the invasion and occupation of the Peloponnese was recorded in the medieval Chronicle of Monemvasia.
Inside the old medieval town all the vehicles are prohibited. The most common way to reach the castle of Monemvasia is by car.
As soon as you arrive at the entrance gate of the castle, you can leave your luggage and the other passengers while the driver can go back to the bridge and search for a public parking space on the right side of the road. If you are lucky you might find close to the centre, keep in mind that during high season periods (weekends, holidays etc) you might have to park a bit further. After that, the driver can head back to the entrance either on foot, by bus (every 30 minutes) 1,10 euros ticket or by taxi 4 euros .
Useful notice : For your own convenience there are luggage porters that can carry your luggage upon arrival ( on the average price of 5 euros) , you can call me one hour before your arrival at my personal phone number and I will organize it.
