The Old Cottage is located within a breathtaking area of natural beauty having some of the finest views available on the west coast of the UK. Stare out towards the wild Atlantic Ocean and take in several of our Hebridean islands which can be visited via local ports. We are blessed with nearby rocky and sandy beaches where you can sit and gaze down the specially protected Sound of Jura where Ireland lies distantly beyond the horizon. One can certainly see and feel the Celtic heritage of this special landscape. Our home was once two separate bothies which existed as part of the old Arduaine farmstead located directly beneath the ancient, Iron age dun or hillfort, prior to the developments which make the building what it is today. This is a natural history treasure trove with so much to find in our immediate area including the Otter, Red Squirrel, Roe Deer, Grey Seal, HarbourPorpoise, Golden Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Raven, Gannet and many more fantastic creatures. In fact all of these species have been seen from our property or very close to it.
Accessible from The Old Cottage, we have some lovely hills and moorland to roam with higher mountains only a short drive. So much more...
Your hosts, Karen and Darren have recently moved to Argyll having fallen in love with the region following several holidays here. Karen has previously owned a Bed and Breakfast establishment for eight years in North Hertfordshire, and Darren has spent over twenty five years working within the Logistics business sector before embarking on a new career. We both have a keen interest in natural history, birdwatching, botany, geology, history, archaeology, music, art and culture, so we will be very happy to share our enthusiasm and local knowledge with you to ensure that you have a wonderful stay at our abode.
We have spent several months thoughtfully renovating this cottage to enhance the facilities and comfort for our guests, so we very much hope you enjoy your time with us.
Within a very short walking distance, we are very lucky to have the award winning and renowned Loch Melfort hotel offering great restaurant and bar facilities which we are sure our guests will appreciate.
Adjacent to our cottage is the famous Arduaine National Trust for Scotland garden. It provides a superlative haven where a wealth of exotic flowering plants can be savoured and peace and relaxation can be found on its many pathways and viewpoints.
The lovely coastal town of Oban is a major draw in the area with first class facilities and it leads the way with many feted seafood establishments. Also, the Oban distillery has recently been voted the best visitor experience in Scotland so why not pay it a visit and perhaps enjoy a wee dram! What's more, Oban has a very important ferry port from where Caledonian MacBrayne sails to many different islands from Islay to Barra and even to mystic St.Kilda, islands on the western edge of Europe for sure!
Beyond Oban lies mountainous munro country where Glencoe and Ben Nevis can be easily reached within two hours.
Southwards lies the mysterious Kilmartin Glen which has an array of ancient cairns, stones and stone circles. A must visit.
