Old Bake House is the perfect rural retreat for 2. Tucked away with its gorgeous gardens and riverside seting it provides a peaceful spot for both a restorative break or an activity-packed holiday in the Black Mountains, Brecon Beacons and the nearby Wye Valley. The cottage is surprisingly spacious and oozes character in the form of flagstone floors, original oak beams and vaulted ceiliing in the living area. There's also a woodburning stove for the autumn and winter months. Wifi is free and excellent, and there is a 42 inch Smart TV. The bedroom features a Super KIng Size bed which can also be configured as 2 single beds on request. This is a lovely room with 2 windows with views of the gardens. There is also space for a travel cot if you're bringing baby too.
The cottage is on one level - no stairs - and there is a step up of about 6 inches into the shower. The private parking space is roughly 25 metres from thr front door. The south facing sun room is furnished with 2 easy chairs with foot rests where you can relax with a great view of the beautiful garden and all the wildlife it attracts. The kitchen is fully equipped with the following: cooker with double oven and hob, microwave oven, fridge, separate under counter freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, toaster, kettle and cafetiere. As the cottage is roughly 200 years old, one of the oak beams and the doorway from the living area to the sun room are lower than the modern standard.
There are maps and books of local walks in the living room as well as information leaflets for activities and places to visit in the area. Abergavenny is 15 miles away and Hay on Wye, the world famous Town of Books, is 8 miles from the cottage. Both are interesting towns in their own right and boast an excellent choice of eateries and independent shops. The recently refurbished Hay Castle is worth visiting as are the antique and vintage shops and of course the varied book stores.
We are a retired couple and we fell in love with this beautiful area after a holiday here in 2017. After deciding to retire here, the search for our perfect home ended the day we found Cwm Mill and its 2 holiday cottages, River Cottage and the Old Bake House. Now we are delighted to be able to introduce others to this stunning location, and to share our own unique and beautiful setting with guests from all over the UK and abroad.
The Old Bake House and River Cottage are located on a 4.5 acre site comprising the properties, gardens, parking / driveway areas and a small paddock. The properties are surrounded by a livestock farm with sheep & cattle. There is a direct footpath to the top of the Black Hill which then provides onward access to the Cat's Back ridge, Hay Bluff and Offa's Dyke Path, the once fortified boundary which the Normans established to separate Wales from England. The Black Mountains form part of the Brecon Beacons National Park where a wide range of activities is on offer. We're close to the Wye Valley & our area forms part of Herefordshire's Golden Valley, two areas of outstanding natural beauty. While we are in a very rural setting, we are within 30 minutes of the large and historic towns of Abergavenny and Hereford. Hay on Wye, the world famous town of books, is only 8.5 miles away. Hay is an atmospheric and quirky small town with its own castle, numerous antique, vintage clothing and crafts shops, cafes & bars.
