The cottage is an excellent base for exploring this unspoilt part of Scotland. Forest walks for all abilities are readily available in the nearby Galloway Forest Park, Britain's first designated Dark Sky Park, and the UK’s largest forest.
South West of Scotland is well known for its mild climate, attractive unspoilt countryside and for the diversity of the outdoor and recreational pursuits. The area is renowned for golf, birdwatching, fishing, walking and the many beautiful gardens of South West Scotland. Logan Botanic Gardens, Castle Kennedy and Threave Gardens are all within easy reach as well as many smaller gardens and nurseries.
An ideal destination for active families, the local area is a natural playground. A short drive takes you to Cairnsmore of Fleet National Nature Reserve, one of the wildest areas within South West Scotland and a site of Special Scientific Interest within the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere. The area boasts a wide range of wildlife habitats with peregrine falcon, hen harriers and red deer often seen and is a wildlife enthusiasts paradise. Not for the feint hearted is the Graham from which the reserve takes its name – Cairnsmore of Fleet, rising 711m in elevation, from the top are the most spectacular views which on a clear day can include the Isle of Man and Ailsa Craig off the Ayrshire coast.
Nearby Newton Stewart offers all the usual facilities of a small rural town including numerous places for eating out, a cinema, swimming pool at the Merrick Leisure Centre and supermarkets.
Bladnoch Whisky Distillery, one of Scotland's oldest with its Visitor Centre and cafe are just a 2 minute drive away, where you can take a tour of the distillery and estate. Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town is only 3 miles from the cottage, and hosts regular events including the extremely popular Book Festival each Autumn.
