Informace o okolí
Sardina is located in the municipality of Gáldar, just 27 kilometers from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. At its highest point, Gáldar rises to around 1,700 meters above sea level, and its upper areas are home to striking natural formations such as Montañón Negro, the Caldera de los Pinos de Gáldar, and the Hondo de Fagagesto.
Gáldar was once the capital of one of the island's ancient kingdoms before the Spanish Conquest, and still preserves traces of its pre-Hispanic past. In the heart of the town lies the Painted Cave Archaeological Park (Parque Arqueológico de la Cueva Pintada), which features one of the most important examples of Atlantic rock art.
The historic center, declared a Heritage Site in 1981, is home to several notable buildings. Among them stands the Templo Matriz de Santiago de Gáldar, a masterpiece of Canarian architecture that bridges the Baroque style and early Neoclassicism. Inside, the famous Pila Verde is preserved — the baptismal font where the indigenous islanders were baptized after the conquest.
Nearby, the Old Town Hall buildings, built over an 18th-century structure, shelter one of the oldest dragon trees (Dracaena draco) on the island, documented as early as 1718. Next to it stands the Municipal Theater, a 1912 construction that replaced the original theater founded under the reign of Queen Isabel II.
The so-called Plaza Grande is one of the finest 19th-century boulevards in the Canary Islands, flanked by towering Indian laurels and centuries-old araucarias. Just a few steps away, the Antonio Padrón Museum showcases over a hundred works by the renowned artist, a key figure in the Canarian avant-garde.
In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Gáldar boasts an exceptional coastline, dotted with beaches and natural pools along the northern shore of Gran Canaria. One of its most charming spots is Sardina Beach, known for its seafront restaurants and quaint little fishing port — a place where authenticity meets the Atlantic breeze.
