The Stuff of Legends

Even though tranquil Le Mans has a well-preserved medieval centre and virtually intact Gallo-Roman walls, it is most famous for its iconic 24-hour race. Motorsports lovers the world over descend for a day (and night) of non-stop racing on the Circuit de la Sarthe.

This legendary track encompasses parts of the permanent Bugatti Circuit, but also spills out onto normal roads which get shut for the occasion. One local restaurant is even placed right by a straight which cars hurtle down at top speed before braking for the bend near the Golf des 4 Heures club in Mulsanne.

Also within the circuit are the Antarès events venue and La Sarthe Automobile Museum, open even when there is no racing. The name of the latter refers to the Sarthe River running through the city centre. Colourful, half-timbered buildings line its historic banks, and steps climb gentle hills in the old town.

More charming houses fill the streets surrounding impressive St Julian's Cathedral, started in the 11th century. The city history is detailed in the nearby Museum of Queen Bérengère, and the town hall is in part of the former Palace of the Counts of Maine.

    The Le Mans museum and circuit was the only place we visited but that was great fun. From driving through it had maxed neighbourhoods and there is significant road works happening at the moment which causes lots of diversions.

    Le Mans is somewhat dull.

    Le Mans is somewhat dull. The cathedral is impressive but the old town, compared to others I have visited, is rather underwhelming. We stayed there whilst travelling down, and then back up, France. That was enough. I wouldn't return and wouldn't recommend it to friends. Unless you plan to go for the Le Mans 24 - look elsewhere; there are much prettier places.

    Was there for a bucket list. The 24 Hours of Lemans. The town quaint and charming looking. Did not explore . Driving was fairly easy. Not as crazy as Paris. We did see the Effiel Tower at night which was incredible.

    Le Mans is a relatively small town with one of the most wonderful race tracks in the world (I have been at other great tracks, like Spa, COTA, Monza, Bathurst, and others) and the overall experience during the Le Mans Classic is incredible. I recommend it highly.

    We went to the 24 hours of Le Mans. It was fantastic. There was so much on offer at the track. The public transport was easy to use and the people were happy to help. The weather was fantastic. We had a great experience and looking forward to returning. Most people spoke English. We ate mainly at the food stalls at the track. Make sure to check the opening times of businesses for the days you are in Le Mans as the hours were different to home.

    I had a fantastic stay at Résidence Montana Le Mans.

    I had a fantastic stay at Résidence Montana Le Mans. The property was better in reality and exceeded all of my expectations. The lovely people on reception are really friendly and could not have been more helpful. I highly recommend this venue.

    We booked this for the Le Mans 24 hours race when accommodation is very scare and expensive. It offered everything we needed and is ideally located in the centre of a wonderful town, close to all amenities and attractions. It has secure, spacious underground parking. It was ideal for taking the tram to the circuit (Republique Square is 2 minutes walk away) or driving. The owner lived close by and spoke excellent English which was very helpful when we arrived and tried to get into the underground car park.

    We had booked this apartment because we were attending the Le Mans 24 Hour race. Being in the centre of Le Mans meant it was just a ten minute walk to the T1 tram that took us directly to the circuit in about 20 minutes. Throughout the whole weekend the trams came every four minutes, so no waiting to get there. Also being in the centre meant we could easily find places to eat. The property had secure off road parking which was a huge plus point.

    Lovely apartment, spotlessly clean with everything we needed for our week's stay in Le Mans. Large secure carpark where we were able to safely park our van & motorcycles. Easy access to Ride out into the beautiful countryside and surrounding area. 1min walk to the Tram which is super easy, regular and cheep to use for getting around both into town & out to the Le Mans race circuit.
