With a dome reminiscent of Brunelleschi’s "The Duomo" in Florence, the Hungarian parliament building is undoubtedly the icon of Budapest. It sits majestically by the Danube, the river that both divides and unifies the 2 parts of this capital city: Buda and Pest.
Overseeing Budapest from its vantage point on Castle Hill is Buda Castle. Spectacularly lit at night, it offers the best views across this attractive city steeped in World Heritage. Some unique points of interest are Heroes Square and the Museum of Terror, reminders of the city’s more turbulent past.
Much like in Vienna further up the Danube, coffee and cake is practically an institution in Budapest. And there’s nowhere better to try this than Gerbeaud - the elaborate décor alone makes this café well worth a visit.
To really feel like a local, make a trip to the thermal baths. The relaxed Gellért Baths are a triumph of Art Nouveau grandeur, while based on their sheer size, you can't miss the outdoor Széchenyi Baths. If unusual nightlife is your thing, the club nights at these baths are great fun.

Budapest is a city I have been to several times and there is always something to discover. The city has an excellent public transport system. spine lines have very short intervals. The beautiful building of the Hungarian Parliament, walks along the Danube embankment, Buda Castle, Gellért Hill and the Citadel. Thermal baths, Synagogue, city market.

Budapest is a bit of a surprise for most visitors, it is not particularly geared towards foreigners and they like it that way. Having said that, it has come a really long way since my first visit in 1998. Signage is finally in English in places were it's useful. We either walked or travelled using tram/bus metro tickets which we bought as a 10 pack about £8.00 validate them by feeding them into little machine onboard which date stamps them. Plenty of cycling. There are two sides to the city....Buda and Pest with several walkable bridges between them. Plenty of walks and parks. Food and drink cheaper than nearby Austria so we tried Indian restaurant Santa's which was good. Building are full of architectural detail. Plenty of museums. People are friendly and helpful. Would definitely visit again.
